Weird = wonderful
Do as Missy Elliott says... “Get ur freak on”
Weird = wonderful. That’s something I’ve always thought and turns out there’s some science behind it too.
I’ve recently come across the Von Restorff effect after reading an article on The Drum. It was coined by Hedwig Von Restorff, a female behavioural scientist after finding out through an experiment that when constructing lists of words, the one that’s different will usually be recalled more easily. This quote particularly stood out from The Drum article:
“Weirdness is the opposite of boring. Weirdness makes people laugh. And, most importantly, weirdness can stop people in their tracks… or, in the middle of their scroll. Ultimately, in a world where entertainment is everything, weird is your secret sauce in the recipe for engagement.”
When trying to tackle such serious issues, it can be so easy to fall into the trap of playing it safe, or getting bogged down in the doom and gloom.
I love using creativity to make campaigns that cut through the mundane and grab attention in unexpected ways.
